My fourteen years under the bridge with the poor and marginalized have been fascinating. But perhaps the most powerful impact to me has been how those in our congregation, usually considered on the fringes of society, have taught me about the Kingdom of God. Kenneth, Patrick, Claude, and so many others remind me about biblical principles that are basic to genuine church life.
The church in America has, in many ways, lost its way. Church renewal is desperately needed if we are going to allow God to shape our culture with the things that matter to Him. Renewal and change are hard, but must come.
In September, New Hope Publishers will release a book entitled, “Trolls and Truth: 14 Realities About the Church We Don’t Want to See”, that I wrote about what I have learned and want the church in America to learn from our folks at Church Under the Bridge. I chose the title because: 1) all of us “trolls” worship under a bridge (remember the childhood story of Billy Goat Gruff and the troll beneath the bridge?) and 2) because trolls are rejected in their culture as are many of those who worship with us. It is, in fact, those “trolls” in the Bible (like the widow, orphan, leper, prostitute, etc) that Jesus pointed to about the truths of the Kingdom. In my view, it is a compliment to be a “troll.”
