Although ignored by many Christians, God has always concerned himself with the poor and marginalized. The Bible is filled with calls for the people of God to stand in the gap for those disenfranchised who are trapped in the bondage of hunger, powerlessness, prison, sickness, loneliness, homelessness, and unemployment. From the ancient laws in the Pentateuch to the writers of the New Testament, the call is clear, “do not forget the poor.”
Unfortunately, in a culture of affluence, spiritual myopia and indifference toward the poor are common traits of a generation that has more than it needs. Churches often focus on evangelism or social justice, not realizing both are the gospel and must be integrated. Jesus himself was criticized for identifying with the tax collector, prostitute, leper, and irreligious, while he often reminded the religious folks that they were missing the heart of the Kingdom.
Mission Waco is a Christian interdenominational ministry committed both to the poor and the local church. Through a variety of: 1) relationship-based and holistic programs which empower the poor, 2) mobilizing the local church, and 3) addressing the social injustices which affect the marginalized, this ministry is impacting thousands of people in Waco and the world.
We challenge you and your church to consider ways to expand this exciting journey of serving the poor and disenfranchised, whether in Waco or where you live. We are here to help the poor and the “religious” live out God’s call. Explore the programs and opportunities on this website and let us know what we can do to help you. Blessings in your journey.
